Which remote kit do I need?

Six controls, two families. Every one of them covers three fan speeds and the light. What decides an order is which family your fan needs, whether the light has to dim, how much room the canopy has, and whether you want a timer.

Question 1: how is the fan controlled today?

Answer this before anything else — it splits the range in two, and getting it wrong is the most common way these parts come back.

  1. Does the light have to dim? If not, JF018 is the one to beat — and it is the only kit with timers.
  2. How much room is in the canopy? The mini receiver (2.8 × 2.15 × 1 in) exists for canopies that are already full.
  3. What kind of lamps? Dimming LED or CFL lamps needs FAN-TT53, 35TMINIR28 or a wall control; 53TMINIR28 dims incandescent only.

Decide in order

  1. Do you want to dim the light from the remote?

    No — the light only needs on and off. Choose JF018. It is the only kit with a compact receiver and a pre-programmed transmitter, so it also suits fans whose canopy leaves very little room.

    Yes — I want dimming. Keep going; questions 2 and 3 decide between FAN-TT53 and 53TMINIR28.

  2. How much room is inside the canopy?

    The receiver sits inside the canopy above the fan. Measure before ordering — a receiver that has to be forced will be pinched by the cover, and a pinched antenna shortens remote range.

    • Very little room — the receiver in 53TMINIR28 is the smallest of the three (2.8 × 2.15 × 1 in).
    • Compact but not tight — the receiver in JF018 is 2.76 × 2.17 × 0.97 in and suits a standard 4.5″ canopy that is already full of wiring.
    • Normal space — the receiver in FAN-TT53 is the full-size unit (120 × 53 mm) and needs the canopy to be clear.

  3. Do you want a sleep timer?

    Only JF018 has one — 1H / 2H / 4H / 8H, and a silent mode that keeps the receiver's beep quiet. If a timer matters more than dimming, JF018 is the answer even if you were leaning towards dimming.

Dimmable lamps only. Dimming works with incandescent and halogen lamps, and with LEDs and CFLs that are marked dimmable on the lamp or its packaging. A non-dimmable LED lamp will switch on and off but will not dim — that is the lamp, not the kit. 53TMINIR28 dims incandescent lamps only; FAN-TT53 handles dimmable LED and CFL lamps as well.

Before you order

Four things worth checking

1. Motor type

These kits are for AC motor ceiling fans. DC motor fans use a different controller and are not compatible — check the fan's manual or the label on the motor housing.

2. Canopy space

Measure the space inside the canopy above the fan, and note the diameter of the existing receiver if there is one. A standard 4.5″ canopy is the reference size for these kits.

3. Wiring at the fan

Count the wires coming from the ceiling and from the fan. The receiver connects between them, so a fan with unusual wiring is worth a photo before ordering.

4. Reverse function

None of these kits control a fan's reverse. If your fan reverses at a switch on the motor housing, you keep using that switch as before.
